DNA tests have demonstrated that the kiwis of New Zealand are close cousins of the extinct elephant birds (Aepyornithidae) of Madagascar and not, as has long been thought, allied with the emus and cassowaries of nearby Australia.
It has long been assumed that the ancestral Cretaceous ratite was already flightless. However this discovery, along with the revelation that the extinct New Zealand moas were closest to the flying tinamous of South America, strongly indicates that all major groups of living flightless ratites evolved independently from different flighted ancestors.
