Study of my new favourite dinosaur, the emperor of the Yixian: Yutyrannus hauli.

Based on viewing a cast of the holotype adult skeleton, which unfortunately has the most mangled skull of the trio so some details are conjectural.

No - there is no evidence for the beard. I just thought it looked cool!

minor update: 10-04-2012: I extended the leg feathering to the metatarsals based on structures on the holotype. The early draft of the manuscript I had as a reference last year didn't mention pedal feathers - nor were they visible in the casts I viewed.

Awesome work! For some reason, all I can think of when I look at this is Homer Simpson exclaiming "That dog has a fluffy tail!" It really is a beautiful animal. Oh, and thumbs up for the beard!

Don't know why - the moment I heard of giant feathered tyrannosaurs I impulsively thought "it must have a beard!"

In retrospect - I think I was subconsciously recalling Smrgol from the animated film The Flight of Dragons.
