Evolution straight from the fish's mouth!

This represents a simplified diagram of our favoured hypothesis regarding osteicthyan/arthrodire skull homology.

Rub the top of your head for a moment. That thick skull you are feeling is the internalised remnant of a placoderm exoskeleton. This is cool.

Why did you used to Scollew human the modern tetrapod I only ask because human skulls are very divergent from icthyostega and the like...(the jaws of most non mammalian tetropods are made of more than one bone.)

We wanted to emphasize that "all the bones in the human face" are present on this fish plus a human skull is immediately recognisable to laypersons. Plus, mammalian skulls are nowhere near as heavily modified from the original osteichthyan configuration when compared to living lobe-finned fishes (lungfishes and coelacanths). Note that the coelacanth skull has lost the maxilla while jugal and lacrimals are fused together.

OOOOOOH That's why Entelognathus is such a big deal! I was completely confused as to what was trying to be conveyed by the articles I was reading. 'How was this fish's jaw any different from any other placoderm?' but I can see now what they were trying to say.
Still, I'm not sure if I'm fully on board with the 'sharks come from fish with more conventional boney jaws'.  What is the theory that chondricthys are descended from placoderms based on? (I ask out of a personal lack of knowledge. I'm not trying to sound facetious.)

Ah! Just found your other diagram of how Entelognathus reshapes fish phylogeny. Seeing the intermediate body plans helped clear things up. :D
